Process

The order process for a Grognard is no different than the bikes themselves. That is to say there’s no standard formula, it’s all based on what you, as a customer, want. The first thing to do to read my fine print page very carefully so you’re fully aware of the details before you commit.

Our first conversation will mainly consist of you telling me what you want and me telling you how long it will take me to get it done and what it will cost. On average, the wait is around 6 to 8 weeks from the first call to the time I put your bike in the mail, but that will depend on my current order list.

Once you decide that you want to commit your deposit and get onto the wait list the fun can begin. Even though it might be a while before I start the actual work on your frame that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do in the mean time. We’ll talk in detail about you and your bicycling needs, your physical condition, your average terrain, number of miles and a long list of other considerations.

Most people find the process of getting their bike made just as enjoyable as finally getting to ride it. Since all Grognards are custom, everything, not just the frame, needs to be decided upon. From which headset to which seat to which drive train, it all needs to be sorted out. Even if you’re not buying a completely built-up bike I need to know what parts you’ll use so I can maximize the fit and performance of the frame.

While most decisions about the frame will be made by me based on the input I get from you, those of you buying a whole bike will have many, many more things to decide upon, if you’d like. If, however, you’d like to put in your order and then simply sit back until I call to say it’s done that’s great too. I can make all the choices for you if that’s what you’d prefer.

So, if this sounds good to you and you’ve decided that a Grognard is the bike for you please read the information below then click here to access the order form. Fill it out and submit it back to me. Shortly after I get it I’ll give you a call and we can begin the process getting you out on the sweetest machine on the road (or trail).

Fine Print

Warranty: Every Grognard bicycle frame comes with a 5-year warranty. It covers material defects and joint integrity and is valid only to the original owner. It does not cover failures or damage caused by misuse, abuse, or rust.

*Important Note* I don’t build bomb-run downhill rigs. A Grognard bike is one tough machine, but it’s not meant to be ridden like a 9-inch travel, 40-pound huck-monster, or even a 6-incher. Please use common sense when riding one of my bikes.

Deposit and payment: To get your name on wait list I need a $500 (US dollars) non-refundable deposit. Once your name is on the list I’ll order your frame parts so that everything is ready to roll once your turn comes up. That is what the deposit is for. Please be sure you are absolutely positive you are ready for a Grognard frame before sending your deposit because the money will be spent right away and will not be available for return. Once your turn comes up there will be many calls and e-mails and when the bike/frame is ready to ship I’ll ask for the final payment. Once I’ve received that the bike will be put in the mail and you will be only days away from pure bliss.

Payment:  The best way to pay is to send the money to my e-mail address via PayPal.  Personal check, cashiers check or money order work well also.  Please don't send cash unless you must.

Frame Prep: I don’t do things half way here at Grognard Bicycle Company. Your frame will be fully prepped with a faced and chased bottom bracket, faced and reamed head tube, faced dropout tabs (if applicable) and a coat of Frame Saver in the tubes.

*Important Note* JP Weigle Frame Saver must be applied every year if you ride in any wet conditions at all. Not adding Frame Saver WILL cause the frame to rust, which will probably cause the frame to fail. Modern tubing is a technological wonder, but it’s not like the WWII vintage “tubing” that bikes were once made with. It will not hold up for 50 years being left out in the rain. It’s very simple: put Frame Saver in every year and the frame won’t rust. Don’t and the frame will rust – which will void your warranty and, more importantly, ruin your super sweet ride.

Wait time: Wait times for a Grognard bike depend on how many people are on the list. Once you call I can give you a more accurate estimation. Usually the wait is around 6 weeks. Bear in mind, however, that even after your name is on the list the quoted wait can change. As a one-man operation there are many things I control, and many that I don’t. Parts can be delayed, the painter can get sick, any number of things can happen. Things like this are very rare, and usually the estimated times are accurate. But it’s best to come into the process with a realistic outlook and understanding.

Shipping: Frame shipping within the Continental United States is covered in the price of the bicycle/frame. Shipping to any location outside the Continental United States will be extra based upon where you live. I make arrangements to get the box into your country, it’s up to you to deal with customs and get it to your house. Sorry if that sounds blunt, but there’s little I can do from here when it comes to customs in other countries.
